Major Indian airlines, including IndiGo, Air India, and Akasa Air, have collectively pledged to lease more than 200 aircraft through the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) by 2025. This strategic shift, announced this week, marks a significant milestone in India’s efforts to establish itself as a global hub for aviation financing and leasing, effectively shifting financial operations away from traditional hubs like Ireland and Singapore.

The Strategic Shift in Aviation Finance

Historically, Indian carriers have relied heavily on foreign jurisdictions to lease their fleets due to complex domestic tax structures and regulatory hurdles. By utilizing the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) at GIFT City, airlines can now access a simplified regulatory environment, tax incentives, and a streamlined legal framework designed specifically for aviation assets.

The move is part of a broader government initiative to localize the aviation supply chain. According to data from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, India is currently the world’s third-largest domestic aviation market, yet it previously lacked a domestic framework to capitalize on the lucrative aircraft leasing market.

Driving Economic Growth and Efficiency

The commitment to lease over 200 aircraft represents a multi-billion dollar investment into the Indian financial ecosystem. Industry analysts note that this transition reduces the cost of capital for airlines, as it eliminates the need for intermediaries in overseas jurisdictions and mitigates exposure to fluctuating foreign exchange risks.
