Strengthening Global Integration
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has officially launched an initiative to harmonize domestic space industry regulations with international frameworks, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs announced on Friday. The move comes as India hosted the ISO International Subcommittee meetings on ‘Space Systems and Operations’ for the first time, signaling the nation’s increasing influence in the global aerospace regulatory landscape.
Contextualizing the Shift
India’s space sector has undergone a radical transformation over the past several years, shifting from a state-dominated model to one that encourages private sector participation. The creation of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) serves as the primary catalyst for this shift, acting as a bridge between the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and emerging private startups.
Standardization remains the bedrock of this transition. By aligning with ISO (International Organization for Standardization) protocols, India aims to ensure that its domestic technological advancements remain compatible with global launch, manufacturing, and operational requirements.
Industry Perspectives and Expert Consensus
The recent ISO subcommittee meeting in India drew 131 international delegates from 13 countries, representing a diverse cross-section of national standards bodies, space agencies, and private industry leaders. Nidhi Khare, Secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs, emphasized that this collaboration is essential for creating a safe and sustainable space economy.
