Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL) announced on Tuesday that its board of directors has officially approved a strategic partnership with Lohum Cleantech to revitalize the company’s idle copper plant in Gujarat. This move, coupled with a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Engineers India Ltd (EIL), marks a significant step in India’s broader initiative to secure critical mineral supply chains and modernize its state-owned mining infrastructure.

Copper is increasingly viewed as a linchpin of the global energy transition, essential for electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing, renewable energy infrastructure, and advanced electronics. As India pushes to reduce its reliance on imported minerals, the domestic mining sector has faced historical hurdles, including aging infrastructure and administrative delays.
The Gujarat facility, which has remained non-operational for an extended period, represents a vital asset that the government is now eager to bring back online. The collaboration with Engineers India Ltd (EIL) focuses on enhancing the technical and engineering capabilities of HCL’s widespread operations.
