Kuku FM Sets Sights on Public Market
Kuku Technologies Ltd, the parent company of the vernacular audio platform Kuku FM and streaming app Kuku TV, has confidentially filed draft papers with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for an initial public offering (IPO). The company aims to raise between Rs 2,500 crore and Rs 3,500 crore, targeting a valuation of approximately Rs 15,000 crore, or USD 1.8 billion. The offering is expected to launch in the latter half of the current financial year and will consist of a mix of fresh equity shares and an offer-for-sale (OFS) from existing stakeholders.
Contextual Growth in Vernacular Media
Founded in 2018 by IIT alumni Lal Chand Bisu, Vinod Kumar, and Vikas Goyal, the platform has rapidly evolved from an audio-only service to a multi-format digital entertainment provider. Kuku Technologies currently manages a portfolio that includes audiobooks, edutainment, and the recently launched Kuku TV, which specializes in short-form micro-dramas. This expansion comes as the demand for regional-language digital content in India continues to rise, fueled by widespread smartphone adoption and affordable mobile data.
Financial Performance and AI Integration
The company’s financial trajectory has seen significant acceleration, with revenue surging to over Rs 1,400 crore in fiscal year 2026, up from Rs 241 crore in the previous year. Industry insiders note that the firm is nearing operational break-even, a milestone driven by the aggressive deployment of artificial intelligence. By utilizing AI for content production, personalized recommendations, and customer acquisition, Kuku has managed to scale its operations while maintaining cost efficiency.
Strategic Expansion and Market Reach
With a library exceeding 60,000 hours of programming across eight Indian languages, the platform has surpassed 400 million cumulative downloads. The company currently counts over 10 million active paying subscribers, a testament to the success of its diverse content library. Proceeds from the upcoming IPO are earmarked for further investment in AI infrastructure, content production, and geographic expansion into international markets, including the United States.
Investor Backing and Industry Outlook
Kuku Technologies has successfully raised over USD 150 million from a diverse group of investors, including Fundamentum Partnership, Krafton, Vertex Ventures, and the International Finance Corporation. Notably, former Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni is also among the firm’s prominent investors. The move toward an IPO follows a broader industry trend, as India’s micro-drama segment experiences an annual growth rate of approximately 60 percent. As the company prepares for its public debut, market analysts will be watching to see how the integration of AI-driven micro-dramas influences long-term profitability and whether the firm can successfully replicate its domestic success in highly competitive Western markets.
