IndiGo, India’s largest airline, officially implemented a new priority baggage service for its premium ‘IndiGo Stretch’ customers effective May 1, 2024, as part of a broader strategy to capture a larger share of the country’s growing premium travel market. This operational adjustment aims to differentiate the airline’s recently launched business-class product from its traditional economy offerings, providing a seamless, time-sensitive experience for high-value passengers at major hubs across the country.

The Evolution of India’s Low-Cost Carrier Model

For over a decade, IndiGo operated exclusively as a low-cost carrier, focusing on high-frequency, no-frills service that prioritized operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness. However, the domestic aviation landscape has shifted significantly following the resurgence of Air India and the maturing of Indian travelers’ preferences.

In response to changing consumer demand, the airline introduced ‘IndiGo Stretch’ in early 2024. This move marked the airline’s first foray into a business-class-style cabin, featuring wider seats, increased legroom, and enhanced meal services on key domestic routes, signaling a departure from its purely budget-focused identity.

Operational Refinements and Competitive Strategy

The addition of priority baggage handling addresses a critical pain point for business travelers who prioritize efficiency upon arrival. By ensuring that baggage belonging to Stretch passengers is among the first to be offloaded, IndiGo is aligning its service standards with legacy full-service carriers.

Industry analysts note that this shift is not merely about comfort but about market share. According to data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Indian domestic air traffic has seen record-breaking figures post-pandemic, with a notable uptick in passengers willing to pay a premium for comfort and reliability.
