A New Frontier for Domestic Manufacturing
Sahasra Semiconductors Pvt Ltd inaugurated India’s first SME-led semiconductor chip manufacturing facility in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan, on May 15, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s strategy to bolster domestic electronics production. Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, alongside Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, virtually launched the Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) unit, which serves as a critical entry point for the state into the global semiconductor supply chain.
Contextualizing the Semiconductor Push
The facility arrives as India intensifies efforts to reduce reliance on foreign imports for critical electronic components. Supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPECS), the project represents an investment of over Rs 150 crore. This development is part of a broader trend where India has seen electronics production grow six-fold to approximately Rs 13 lakh crores over the last 12 years.
Technical Capabilities and Scaling
Spanning 57,000 square feet, the Bhiwadi unit features advanced Class 10K and 100K cleanrooms designed for high-precision manufacturing. The facility currently focuses on packaging memory chips, such as Micro SD cards and flash storage devices, as well as LED driver ICs, eSIMs, and RFID products. Currently, the plant operates with an annual capacity of 60 million units, with strategic plans to scale production to 400-600 million units within the next three years.
Global Reach and Economic Impact
The project is already demonstrating international competitiveness, with over 60 percent of its current output designated for export markets including the United States, Germany, France, and China. Beyond the individual facility, the Electronics Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) in Bhiwadi has become a magnet for industrial growth. The cluster has attracted over Rs 1,200 crore in planned investments from 20 companies, creating more than 2,700 jobs in sectors ranging from EV parts to industrial electronics.
Strategic Implications for the Industry
The inauguration underscores the critical role of SMEs in democratizing high-tech manufacturing. By leveraging government-backed infrastructure like the EMC, smaller players are now capable of participating in a sector previously dominated by massive conglomerates. State-level initiatives, such as the Rajasthan Semiconductor Policy, further signal a shift toward localized manufacturing hubs that benefit from proximity to major economic centers like the Delhi-NCR region.
Looking Ahead
Industry observers should monitor the facility’s ability to scale its packaging capacity as planned, as this will serve as a bellwether for the viability of SME-led semiconductor ventures in India. Furthermore, the expansion of the Bhiwadi EMC will likely attract additional upstream and downstream suppliers, potentially creating a self-sustaining ecosystem for semiconductor components. Future developments will likely hinge on continued policy support and the ability of domestic firms to navigate the complex geopolitical landscape of global chip supply chains.
