First launched commercially in 2020 after years of scientific development and policy advocacy, the process offers urban populations a climate-friendly end-of-life choice that actively eliminates carbon emissions while restoring local soil health.

The Environmental Footprint of Traditional End-of-Life Choices

For generations, standard death care practices have imposed a quiet but significant ecological toll on the planet.

Conventional cremation relies heavily on fossil fuels, releasing approximately 530 pounds of carbon dioxide per body into the atmosphere—an environmental footprint equivalent to driving a fuel-efficient passenger car from Seattle to San Diego.

Traditional ground burials present severe land-use challenges in expanding metropolitan areas while depositing millions of gallons of toxic embalming fluids, chemically treated wooden caskets, and massive concrete vaults into the ground each year.

Driven by a desire to eliminate these pollutants, Spade sought to pioneer a practical, urban-ready alternative that converts human remains directly into clean, nutrient-dense soil.

The Biological Mechanics of Natural Organic Reduction

The journey from architectural concept to practical reality required bridging agricultural science with urban funeral services.

Spade initiated her scientific research after discovering livestock composting methodologies developed by Dr. Lynne Carpenter-Boggs, chair of the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences at Washington State University.

Partnering with Carpenter-Boggs, Spade refined a proprietary recipe utilizing individual stainless steel vessels packed with a precise blend of plant materials, including straw, alfalfa, and wood chips.

This organic mixture maintains an ideal carbon-to-nitrogen ratio while permitting structural air flow, allowing naturally occurring microbes to fuel the decomposition process without external energy inputs.

Internal thermal sensors verify that each vessel holds a steady temperature of 131 degrees Fahrenheit for three consecutive days, a critical threshold that neutralizes harmful pathogens and transforms the body into soil over a 30-day period.

The soil then undergoes a month-long curing process to cool and dry, with non-organic materials like artificial joints removed for recycling, yielding 20 to 30 bags of rich mulch that families can keep or donate to ecological restoration projects.

Navigating Legal Barriers and Market Expansion

Translating scientific research into a commercial business initially ran into absolute legal blockades, as human composting was completely unauthorized in all 50 U.S. states.

To overcome these legal obstacles, Spade collaborated with legal expert Tanya Marsh and Washington state Sen. Jamie Pedersen, who successfully sponsored legislation to legalize natural organic reduction in 2019.

Since Washington became the first jurisdiction to legalize the practice, 13 additional states have passed similar legislation authorizing human composting, with more than a dozen other state legislatures currently considering active bills.

Competitors have rapidly entered the emerging sector alongside Recompose, including Seattle-area providers Return Home and Earth Funeral, the latter of which recently opened the East Coast’s first commercial human composting facility.

Broad Market Appeal Across Political and Generational Lines

Although initially expected to appeal primarily to environmentally conscious urban demographics, natural organic reduction is attracting surprisingly diverse consumer segments.

Micah Truman, founder and CEO of Return Home, noted that customer demand spans the political spectrum, drawing strong interest from conservative agricultural communities in Eastern Washington as well as urban progressives.

While environmentally focused consumers prioritize reducing their carbon footprint, rural farmers and outdoorsmen frequently select soil transformation out of a deep personal connection to returning to the land.

Furthermore, younger adults are increasingly taking action early, selecting pre-paid flexible payment arrangements to secure eco-friendly arrangements long before traditional end-of-life planning typically occurs.

Elyssa Tappero, a 30-something state tsunami program manager who pre-funds her service via $100 monthly installments, noted that avoiding funeral industry markups and heavy carbon emissions drove her decision to choose composting.

Industry Outlook and What to Watch Next

As state-level legalizations accelerate across the country, death care providers are actively scaling operations to meet growing consumer demand.

Industry observers are watching state legislatures across the Midwest and Southern United States to see how quickly natural organic reduction achieves universal legal acceptance.

As commercial capacity expands, the sector’s long-term success will rely on integrating human composting into mainstream municipal funeral planning and expanding partnerships with regional land conservation organizations to receive donated soil.
