D Y Patil International University (DYPIU) in Pune, Maharashtra, announced on May 11 a pivotal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with French software giant Dassault Systèmes to establish a state-of-the-art Digital Engineering and Digital Manufacturing Experience Centre on its campus, aiming to bridge the gap between academic learning and evolving industry demands, thereby significantly enhancing student employability and fostering innovation in smart manufacturing.

The global manufacturing landscape is undergoing a profound transformation driven by Industry 4.0, characterized by the integration of digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and advanced robotics. In India, the “Make in India” initiative further emphasizes the need for a skilled workforce proficient in these next-generation manufacturing processes. Universities are increasingly tasked with preparing graduates not just with theoretical knowledge but with hands-on experience in cutting-edge digital tools and methodologies. This collaboration between DYPIU, a multidisciplinary institution known for its industry integration focus, and Dassault Systèmes, a global leader in 3D design software, 3D digital mock-up, and product lifecycle management (PLM) solutions, addresses this critical demand.

Pioneering Digital Education in Maharashtra

The newly established Experience Centre is poised to become one of Maharashtra’s first of its kind in Smart Manufacturing, offering a robust ecosystem for experiential learning. It will integrate advanced digital technologies directly into DYPIU’s Smart Manufacturing curriculum, providing students with a unique blend of theoretical understanding and practical application.

The centre’s facilities are designed to immerse students in the future of engineering and manufacturing. Key components include a NextGen Product Innovation Lab, an Intelligent Production System Lab, and a Virtual Twin and Simulation Lab equipped with virtual reality capabilities. These specialized environments will enable students to engage directly with real-world industry challenges.

Students will gain invaluable exposure to a suite of advanced technologies critical for modern industry. This includes virtual twins, which create digital replicas of physical assets; generative design, an AI-powered design exploration process; multi-physics simulations, analyzing complex systems under various conditions; and comprehensive digital manufacturing systems.

Holistic Development and Industry Alignment

Beyond infrastructure, the collaboration emphasizes holistic student and faculty development. Students will benefit from direct involvement in live industry projects, access to globally recognized certification programmes, and opportunities for internships within leading companies. Regular interactions with industry professionals are also planned to ensure students remain abreast of current trends and requirements.

Faculty development is a cornerstone of this partnership. The initiative includes curriculum enhancement to align with global industry standards and a comprehensive three-year Training of Trainers (ToT) programme. This ToT program will equip DYPIU faculty with expertise in advanced digital manufacturing workflows, ensuring high-quality instruction and mentorship for students.

Expert Perspectives on a Transformative Initiative

“Our collaboration with DYPIU to establish this Experience Centre marks a significant step in bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world application,” stated Deepak NG, Managing Director, India, Dassault Systèmes. He emphasized that by providing access to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform and virtual twin technologies, the partnership aims to cultivate an innovation-driven ecosystem that aligns with the “Make in India” vision and the demands of Industry 4.0.

Prof. (Dr.) Manish Bhalla, Vice Chancellor, DYPIU, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the transformative potential. “The establishment of the Experience Centre at DYPIU, powered by Dassault Systèmes, will be one of the first of its kind in the field of Smart Manufacturing in the state of Maharashtra,” he remarked. Dr. Bhalla underscored the centre’s role in fostering an environment where young students actively solve real-world industry problems while facilitating effective technology transfer, thereby empowering them to become future-ready engineers.

Implications for the Future of Manufacturing Education

This strategic alliance between DYPIU and Dassault Systèmes sets a precedent for industry-academia collaboration in India. By providing students with hands-on experience in cutting-edge digital tools, the Experience Centre is expected to significantly boost the employability of graduates in advanced manufacturing sectors. It positions DYPIU as a frontrunner in preparing a workforce capable of driving India’s industrial growth and technological self-reliance.

The initiative also serves as a model for other educational institutions seeking to modernize their curricula and infrastructure to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving global economy. The focus on virtual twins, generative design, and advanced simulation tools reflects a proactive approach to skill development, moving beyond traditional engineering education.

Moving forward, the success of this centre will be closely watched as a benchmark for future partnerships. Key indicators will include student placement rates in high-tech manufacturing roles, the number of successful industry projects undertaken, and the adoption of new research methodologies. This collaboration is a vital step towards creating a robust talent pipeline, ensuring India remains competitive in the global advanced manufacturing landscape and continues to innovate under the banner of Industry 4.0.
